This weekend sets the stage for an electrifying slate of rugby matches. The action ignites Friday night at 7:20pm, when the formidable Broncos meet the surging Storm, in a clash of two of this year's most dynamic teams. Saturday's headline duel features the top-seeded Panthers locking horns with the fan-favorite Warriors, followed by an anticipated showdown between the Sharks and the Roosters. Rounding off the weekend's exhilarating lineup, the Raiders face off against the Knights on Sunday. With the Knights entering as heavy favorites on their home turf, it promises to be a riveting conclusion to a packed rugby weekend
Here is our predictions for Finals Week 1.
Broncos vs Storm: In their recent clash, both the Broncos and the Storm chose to field teams that weren't at full strength, rendering predictions for their upcoming game somewhat tricky. Though the Broncos have historically found it challenging to topple the Storm, there's a sense that the tides might be turning. Papenhuyzen’s and Munsters X factor for the Storm is undeniable, but the excitement around the 2023 finals suggests anything is possible. Both squads boast immense talent, fortified by their formidable forward packs. Even though the Storm had a 10-point lead in their previous encounter, the Broncos were noticeably absent of their key players. The anticipated return of Adam Reynolds and Patrick Carrigan gives the Broncos a much-needed boost and maturity. The influence of Reynolds this season, in particular, can't be ignored. Although the Storm are reinforcing their lineup, the edge might just go to the Broncos, especially with their home crowd advantage.
Predictions:
Head to Head: Broncos edge it.
In the Run: Payne Haas to bulldoze over in the final 10 minutes of the first half.
Panthers vs Warriors: The Panthers showcased their dominance last week, securing the Minor Premiership and ending the Cowboys' hopes. On the other side, the Warriors, despite being a transformed team this season, fell short against the Dolphins. The Warriors had previously enjoyed a seven-game winning streak, beating top-tier teams like the Sharks and Raiders. But with Shaun Johnson's potential absence, even the stellar performances of Charnze Nicoll-Kolkstad, Adam Fonua-Blake, and others might not be enough against the formidable Panthers.
Predictions:
Head to Head: Panthers
In the Run: Liam Martin exits for HIA (precaution only) at minute 5 after a legal big hit from Fonua-Blake.
Sharks vs Roosters: The Sharks triumphed over the Raiders in a closely contested match until Sebastian Kris's exit turned the tide. Meanwhile, the Roosters showcased exceptional back end of season form against the Rabbitohs. Shark Park might not be as intimidating as before, but the Roosters need to be cautious. Sam Walker's return boosts the Roosters' chances, but the Sharks, motivated by previous finals' disappointments, are ready to secure a win. With Nicho Hynes in prime form, the Sharks are poised to end the Roosters' season.
Predictions:
Head to Head: Sharks
In the run: Sam Walker nails a 40/20 during the Roosters' 6th set.
Knights v Raiders: The Knights displayed dominance over the Dragons, even without their star, Kalyn Ponga. The Raiders, despite showing promise, have been unpredictable. With the Newcastle crowd behind them, the Knights are rightly favourites. The inclusion of Ponga, Young, Best, and others make the Knights almost scary in strike power, while the Raiders are missing a few key players. Ricky's guidance will ensure the Raiders bring their A-game and are competitive to the end, but it’s a tough ask.
Predictions:
Head to Head: Knights just.
In the run: Jackson Hastings orchestrates a last-minute try-sealing victory.
